I’m Going To Win The Lottery

Todays contribution comes for David Porter.  David is a  long acquantaince, freind and missionary in France.  He’s right on.  Enjoy.

“I’m Going To Win the Lottery!” ?

Lately there’s been an advertisement on the television here in France for the lottery. One couple wins and takes a trip around the world. Another man buys a big house and car with his winnings and still another one purchases the business he works for (but keeps his boss). You see what happens when you win the lottery!

Yeah!

The eminent “philosopher” P.T. Barnum once said something tremendously insightful, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” The cartoon cat, Garfield, wisely observed, “It’s amazing some of the things that people would rather have than money.” A lottery ticket for example.

Chances of winning the lottery rank right up there with receiving a personal email from the Man in the Moon. Yet people spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year hoping to win the lottery.

And there are a lot of happy winners of the lottery—the sponsors mostly. They grin widely as the suckers—excuse me—“players” line up.

Justin Wilson once told the story of a man who raffled off a dead mule. No one knew it was dead, though, except the owner. He sold 400 tickets at $2 a ticket. Minus $20 for printing the tickets and $50 for the original price of the mule before he died, the lottery sponsor made $730 on his project.

“Bet you made a lot of people mad,” someone observed.

“No, just one. And I gave him his money back.”

Humans play the lottery because they love to hope.

There’s at least three kinds of hope. There’s wild and crazy hope. People don’t pay $5 to win the lottery. They pay $5 to hope like crazy. And at the end all they had was the thrill of hoping a minute and the worthless lottery ticket in their hand.

This kind of hope can eventually sour you on the hoping business.

Then there’s hard-work hope. These people want to accomplish something in life so they put everything they have into it. Their body sweats, they deprive themselves to reach their goal, but during the whole process they’re buoyed by the image of what they hope to accomplish.

This is a lot more substantial than the lottery. Says the New York Times in a New Year’s Eve editorial, “Who can live without fresh intentions, new purposes? Who does not welcome a chance to start over, if only on a new page of the calendar? Life goes on, but it goes on so much better with hope and renewal and recommitment.”

Then there’s God-based hope. Hope in this case is joined at the hip with faith. This is not an “I-hope-I-win-the-lottery” hope or an “I-hope-I-catch-some-fish” hope. It goes beyond a “work hard for your dreams” hope.

It’s a powerful conviction in the center of us that God’s promises are true.

He’s promised forgiveness of sins so I repent and put my confidence in Jesus.
He’s promised eternal life and I’m living down here with the conviction that something even better is on the way.
He’s promised to come back and I live my life, influenced by the promise.
He’s promised to take care of me so when I’m in need I turn to Him with my whole heart and present my needs to Him.

He promised He would never leave me or forsake me so I have hope, even in the darkest situations.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Rom. 15:13, NIV)

“Oh! May the God of green hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope!” writes Eugene Peterson in the Message.

Hope in Christ is even more tangible and powerful than hard-working human hope, though these two are often linked and honestly, where you find hope in Christ you find a hand-working “hoper” living his life with the joy of what he will receive.

And hope in the lottery?

If you believe in that I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn that I’d like to sell you.

Daniel Fast Day 8 – Benefits

Today begins Day 8 of our Daniel Fast.  Wow!  Things are really starting to come into focus!  Those of you that are fasting know what I am talking about.  Your spiritual antenna is stretched a little higher.  You’re now sensitive to the Holy Spirit.

Last night we were driving at about 5:15 pm, there was the most beautiful Sunset in the West.  Wish we would have taken a photo.  It had the most beautiful colors.  We were playing “Worthy” (track 10) on Clint Brown’s CD “Fall Like Rain”.  Looking to the west we noticed the clouds had made a huge cross in the sky.  I was reminded, over and over and over again how God is in control.  Stop worrying!  Stop complaining!  God is in control!  Somebody give Him praise!

Thought we would list a few benefits we’ve experience from fasting the first 7 days.  These are from our personal experience.

Spiritual Benefits

  • Sensitivity – we’ve become very sensitive to Holy Spirit.  He speaks to us often.
  • Discernment – we’re able to discern situations.  They are made clear to us when others don’t see the same.
  • Hunger – we no longer hunger for food.  We have a tremendous hunger for God’s word and His communion.  God speaks profoundly through His word.
  • Prayer – prayer flows to heaven and back.  There are moments of complete silence in His presence.  Just being in His presence is a true blessing.

What is fasting?  It is denying the physical to concentrate on the spiritual.

You can pray without fasting but you cannot fast without praying.

Would you let us know what you are experiencing?

Blessings,

Pastor Mark & Doris Van Horn

Daniel Fast Day 3 – Putting God First

Putting God first in your life is very important.  That’s why we have chosen a Daniel Fast for the first 21 days in January.  Fasting in January is the same concept as putting God first in your daily life.  Do you pray for your day when you get up in the morning?  Fasting is a constant reminder that we should pray and seek God.  Pray first.  Pray before each meal.  Pray before you go to bed at night.  Pray first.

I belive when you put God first he will bless your entire year!  I also believe God has blessed our church http://www.rolh.org for two reasons.

1)  Because we bless Israel.  (Genesis 12:3)

2)  Because we fast for the first 21 days of each year.

Putting God first allows the windows of heaven to open in your life.  Need a financial miracle.  Ask Him.  Want a career change?  Ask Him.  Looking for soul mate?  Ask Him.  Need healing in your body?  Ask Him!

Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Enjoy Day 3 of your fast.  Most of the head-ache should be gone.  You should start to feel better and more sensitive to the Holy Spirit.

Daniel Fast Day 2 – Great Expectations

Daniel FastHappy New Year!  Day 1 of our Daniel Fast comes to end.  How are you feeling today?

Day 1 brought beans, black-eyed peas, oranges, nuts, & whole grain pasta.  A “no sugar head-ache” hit us during the mid-day. Wow, what a head-ache!  We persevered.  The photo to the left was our lunch.  Those were the best black-eyed peas we’ve ever put in out mouth!

Here are some of the things we prayed for yesterday.  Praying for healing for my son-in-law’s father.  Praying for a great 2011 at River of Life!  Praying a great move of God in your personal life!  Praying for financial provision at our church as we expand with Build The Dream 2.

Will you join us this Thursday as we have our first #WorldPrayerMeeting streaming LIVE over the internet or by teleconference?  Send us your prayer request!  Check it out here:  http://rolheb.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/danielfastv31.jpg

Pray for us today.  We are preaching on the reasons we should fast.

Blessings,

Pastor Mark Van Horn

Daniel Fast Day 1 – No More Big Macs

No more Big Macs!  At least for the next 21 days!  Here are some helpful hints for day 1.

1.  Stay away from caffeine.  You might end up with a head-ache for a few days.  I approach this as my reminder to stay in prayer.  Every time I think about my head-ache, I think, “It’s time to spend some time with God”.  Pray.

2.  You can pray without fasting but you cannot fast without praying.  If your fasting, you must pray.  Fasting is God’s constant reminder that we should be praying.  Every time your tempted to pick up that chocolate chip cookie, it’s God’s way of reminding you that you’re committed to prayer for the next 21 days!  So, put that cookie down!

3.  Drink lots of water!  Include all natural fruit juices as well.  Try v8 for breakfast.

4.  Eat and drink natural things.  Stay away from processed foods.  This will cleanse your body as well.

5.  Make it a habit to pray during your breakfast, lunch, & dinner.  This is what fasting is all about.

Hope you have a great Day 1!  Let us know how your day goes by giving a comment below.

John 14:1-3 (NIV)
1) “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God believe also in me. 2) My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.Blessings,

Top 5 Ways To Overcome Jealousy

Suffer from jealousy?  Ever wonder why people are jealous of you?  Nobody likes to discuss it.  Nobody like to admit it.

Check out this scripture from Romans 13:13.

“Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.”

Isn’t it amazing that Paul would include the word jealousy with other words like sexual immorality, debachery, &  drunkenness?  Usually we don’t think of jealousy as being something we would include with these strong sins.  But Paul mentions it for a good reason.  He understood that if people allow jealousy to rule it makes them live in bondage.  Many people today are living in bondage, the bondage of jealousy

I’m hopeful this blog will allow you to recognize jealousy as something you can deal with and wipe from your heart, soul, & body.

So here are my top 5 ways to overcome jealousy.

    1.  Recognize that jealousy is rooted in selfish and immature desires.  In other words, it’s time to grow up.  It’s time to be happy for others.  One way to do this is to start volunteering your time to help others.  When you begin to help others, this teaches you unselfish activity.
    2.  Realize that jealousy only harms yourself.  It does nothing for the person you are jealous about.  It only harms you.
    3.  Be content with who you are and with what you have.  Learn to be satisfied and confident.
    4.  Understand that jealous efforts are vain.  It gets you nowhere and only halts God’s plan for your life.
    5.  Avoid the company of jealous people.  Solomon write, “Be not envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.”  (Proverbs 24:1)

Twitter Experiment Gone Awry

Recently I conducted a little experiment and wanted to share the results.  Here’s a little background.  I’ve been participating in social media for a few years and always wondered if anyone is actually reading my tweets.  I’ve been unable to find any type analytics that could help so I decided to conduct my own experiment.  So, here it is.

First, let me give you a little background in Twitter.  Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you to answer the question, “What are you doing?” by sending short text messages 140 characters in length,  called “tweets”, to your friends or “followers”.

At the time of this experiment about 250 people following my tweets.  So I’m thinking to myself, “GREAT”!  250 people are reading my tweets!  Not so.  To validate this I posted this simple tweet thinking I would get at least get 10 RT (re-tweets) from people who at least like my content.

Here’s the tweet:  HELP! Does #Twitter really work? Doing an experiment 2 C how many times a tweet gets read. RT this – I’ll report the stats l8r.

I was thinking, maybe, just maybe about 10 people would actually retweet.  It’s a simple task.  And, I was thinking many people would be interested in participating in the experiment.

As promised in my tweet, here are the results!  1

Yep, 1.

Not 2, not 3, not 10, 1.

Surprised I’m still using Twitter?  Not me.  I just consider this an experiment gone awry.  Nearly half our “new” website hits to http://www.rolh.org come from Twitter.  Talk about search engine optimization!  Nearly 33% of all people who tune in live on our internet campus come from Twitter!  We’ve had new people attend our church because of Twitter.

Your thoughts on Twitter?
